A moving first novel, I fell in love with the Yacoub family – each person with their own distinct personality, perspectives and dreams, yet fiercely united in their love for each other, sense of responsibility for one another, and shared history. Having to pick up and move from place to place, forced to because of wars, their identities and experience of “home” were ever-evolving. I just had to keep turning the page. I did struggle a little at first to keep up with who was related to whom and in what way and also with the times and places in the chapters. I suspect it was because of my own lack of experience with and knowledge of people from the Middle East, of their everyday lives and customs, aside from what I see on the daily news. I enjoyed the glimpse into this other world from the point of view of a family. Beautiful story, eloquently written – a debut novel that really shines!

Salt Houses pulls you into the fabric of the life of this Palestinian family and takes you through one tumultuous decade after another. I can rave about how important this book is for humanizing Muslims in a time of radical stereotyping, but it’s also just a damn good read. The draw of these people is irresistible! Every character is flawed, everyone is beautiful, each struggles with issues that are at times like those of any family, and at times unique to the social and cultural struggles of war-torn communities. Hala Alyan’s writing is infused with color and grace—a phenomenal fiction debut!”
