Lt.Hermann was injured; his arm, collarbone and four ribs had been shattered against the dive control bulkhead. He was trying to push himself up to a kneeling position through the pain fogging his head when a massive sonar ping hit the hull and reverberated through everything. For an instant, everyone froze. It seemed as if all sound had vanished from the control room except for the shrill blaring of the klaxon horn. Men throughout the sub were shouting in pain over its incessant wail as scalding water sprayed in from broken pipes running along the ceiling.
